Cost of mobile network access to tumble on April 24
Government officials have confirmed April 24 as the starting date for selling low-cost SIM cards for the CDMA 800 MHz network.
The SIM cards will sell for 1,500 kyats (less than US$2).The cards, 350,000 in total, will be allocated by regional and state governments rather than Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications, Htay Win, a chief engineer at the government agency’s mobile department, told the Eleven Media.
“I’m not sure what documents are necessary to buy the SIM cards since different regional governments will sell the upcoming SIM cards. I think national registration cards and the copy of census may be compulsory,” he said.
SIM cards for the GSM network will be sold for the same price in areas where there is no access to the CDMA network.
Those who purchase the cards must buy 5,000 kyats worth of credit within 15 days to maintain their network access and they will have to use 2,500 kyats of credit per month. When the balance reaches zero customers will have only 15 days to recharge or face termination.
Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications has charged 500,000 kyats for SIM cards for the CDMA network.
New users will be charged the same rates as current ones pay: 50 kyats per minute for outgoing calls. There are no charges for incoming calls.
Mobile-phone shop owner Kan Htoo said it was likely that there would be a black market for the new SIM cards because only 350,000 would be available per month.“Each state and region will get only 25,000 pieces per month. In Yangon there are 33 townships so each township will only get 25,” he said.
